DRACAENA
Dracaena are the ultimate easy care houseplant. The taller varieties can make a real impact and are great if you need to dress a shadier space.
WATER
Dracaenas prefer consistently moist but not waterlogged soil. Water when the top 5 to 10cm's of soil feels dry. Be cautious not to overwater, as dracaenas are sensitive to root rot. If in doubt leave it a few more days.
LIGHT
Your Dracaena will thrive in bright, indirect light but can tolerate lower light conditions. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves. Varieties with variegated foliage, like Dracaena Marginata or the Lemon & Lime tend to need brighter light to maintain their colour.
FERTILISING
Feed your dracaena every 4-6 weeks during the spring and summer months.
SOIL
A standard houseplant soil that contains sand or Perlite is ideal for your Dracaena.
TEMPERATURE
Standard household temperatures are fine for Dracaena, but make sure they are not exposed to cold draughts.
HUMIDITY
Standard household temperatures are fine for Dracaena.
TOXICITY
Dracaena are considered toxic to cats and dogs.
General Watering Tips
Place your plant, still in its plastic nursery pot, inside the decorative pot you've chosen. This setup allows the plant to enjoy the drainage and airflow provided by the nursery pot's holes, which are beneficial for root health.
When it’s time to water, you have two options:
1. Top Watering: Take the plant, nursery pot and all, out of the decorative pot and water it over a sink. Allow the water to drain completely before placing it back in the decorative pot to prevent water build up.
2. Bottom Watering: Place the nursery pot in a shallow dish of water and let the plant absorb moisture from the bottom. This method encourages the roots to grow downward and reduces the risk of overwatering.
Both methods help keep your plant healthy by promoting good drainage and root aeration.
