ORCHID
Flowering orchids are the ultimate houseplant. They come in a huge range of colours and patterns and despite what you might have heard are actually pretty easy to look after if you follow these steps.
Orchids are too often discarded once they have finished flowering but with the right care you orchid will bloom again.
WATER
Most orchids come in clear pots which makes them super easy to tell when they need watering. If the roots look juicy and green then watering is not needed. If they roots are looking grey or white then it's time to water. Never allow your orchid to sit in water.
LIGHT
Orchids need bright, indirect light to bloom. Keep away from direct sunlight as this can scorch the leaves.
FERTILISING
You can feed your Orchid every 2 weeks during the Spring and Summer months with a specific Orchid feed.
SOIL
Orchids don’t grow in regular potting soil. Use a special orchid mix containing bark, sphagnum moss, or perlite to allow for good air circulation around the roots.
TEMPERATURE
Normal household temperatures are fine for Orchids.
HUMIDITY
Orchids thrive in increased humidity. Acheive this by using a humidifier, placing the pot on a humidity tray, or grouping it with other plants. Avoid direct misting of the flowers, as this can lead to rot.
TOXICITY
Considered non toxic to humans and animals.
General Watering Tips
Place your plant, still in its plastic nursery pot, inside the decorative pot you've chosen. This setup allows the plant to enjoy the drainage and airflow provided by the nursery pot's holes, which are beneficial for root health.
When it’s time to water, you have two options:
1. Top Watering: Take the plant, nursery pot and all, out of the decorative pot and water it over a sink. Allow the water to drain completely before placing it back in the decorative pot to prevent water build up.
2. Bottom Watering: Place the nursery pot in a shallow dish of water and let the plant absorb moisture from the bottom. This method encourages the roots to grow downward and reduces the risk of overwatering.
Both methods help keep your plant healthy by promoting good drainage and root aeration.
